Victim of hit and run dies
LORETTO, TENN. – An investigation into a May 10 hit-and-run accident in Loretto has turned into a vehicular homicide case now that the person struck has died, authorities said Friday.

Jerry Springer, 60, who lived with family members in Loretto and Alabama, died Thursday in the trauma center at Vanderbilt Hospital from injuries sustained in the accident earlier this month, according to Loretto Police Chief Bobby Joe Killen.
When Jerry died, this went from a hit-and-run accident to leaving the scene of an accident and vehicular homicide investigation, Killen said.
The chief said Springer, who was known by many as the can man, was riding his bicycle on U.S. 43 when he was struck by a truck just after 7 a.m. The accident site is in front of Pettus Auto Sales in Loretto.
A search continues for the person driving the truck. Killen said authorities are looking for a black, or dark colored, Toyota truck, likely a 1990-95 model.
Officials said the initial impact apparently injured Springer’s leg and ankle, and it tossed Springer in the air causing severe neck, head and back injuries, Killen said.
He really didn’t have a home; he lived with relatives in Loretto and Lexington, Davis said. Everywhere he went, he rode his bicycle. And everyday he rode on (Alabama 101), he was picking up cans.
Police are asking for the public’s help in trying to identify the person driving the truck that struck Springer. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 931-853-6797 or dispatch at 931-762-0450.
